There are many reasons for a college student to take electives, whether it is to alleviate stress and allow them to focus on their more difficult required courses, to raise their GPA, or to learn about something outside of the discipline they are pursuing. These 10 courses are a great fit for students trying to achieve any of these things at Nova Southeastern University (NSU).

1. SOCL 1020 - Introduction to Sociology

People are defined by countless things, but none is so fundamental to how they live their lives as their relationship to society. This course examines these relationships and how they exist in different cultures, as well as the groups and institutions governing various societies, social processes, and how social change is brought about. Special emphasis will be put on the modern-day United States and the impact of technology.

2. ARTS 3550 - Ceramics I

Creating art has always been one of the most surefire ways to relax while also learning a skill that allows you to better express yourself. In this class, students will have the chance to learn basic pottery skills and create their own pottery, whether it is by hand building or with the help of a potter's wheel. Ceramic glazes and firing procedures will be used to help finish off final products. A brief history of ceramics will also be covered.

3. PSYC 2100 - Biological Bases of Behavior

This course covers the genetic, neural, and endocrine bases of behavior. Special focus will be given to brain neuroanatomy, neural communication, sensory processes, motivation, emotion, and arousal.

4. PSYC 1020 - Introduction to Psychology

This courses introduces students to theory, research, and applications in the field of psychology. Special emphasis will be put on the biological bases of behavior, perception, learning, memory, psychological development, personality, social psychology, and the identification and treatment of mental illnesses.

5. PSYC 2110 - Human Sexuality

Topics covered include anatomy of the human sexual system, the human sexual response, the range of sexual behaviors, and sources of attitudes and beliefs about sexuality.

6. HIST 3450 - History of American Immigration

The entire history of the United States is built on its immigrants. This course examines the motivations of those coming to the United States, immigration demographics, the impact of immigration on American society, American reaction to immigration in public opinion, and the political, social, and legal response to immigration.

7. DANC 3200 - Dance History

In this theory-based course, students will learn about the development of Western concert dance, particularly focusing on ballet and modern, and their historical origins and the social contexts in which they were conceived. Among the topics examined will be choreographers, performers, artistic periods and aesthetic genres from each time period from the 15th century to the present.

8. PSYC 3210 - Personality

This course explores the psychoanalytic, humanistic, cognitive, and behavioral theories of personality. Current issues and personality research will also be covered.

9. FILM 3060 - Film Noir

Film noir is a genre that encompasses a series of films from the 1940s and 50s that share a complex narrative, expressionistic cinematography, alienated characters, and psychological themes. Discussions will center around the ways that these films were influenced by the social, political, and economic factors that existed at the time.

10. PSYC 2160 - Social Psychology

In this course, students will explore how people's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are interpreted by the real or imagined presence of other people. Topics covered will include self-perception, judgment and decision making, rationalization, attitude change, conformity, social influence, obedience, attraction, love, aggression, violence, altruism, deception, nonverbal communication, and prejudice.
